Methodology

How we evaluate cryptocurrency exchange execution quality, data sources, metrics, grading, and limitations.

Overview

BridgePort Analytics provides independent, data-driven rankings of cryptocurrency exchanges based on real execution quality metrics. Our methodology focuses on what matters most to traders, which is how much it actually costs to execute trades at various sizes.

Unlike rankings based on self-reported volume or trust scores, our grades are derived directly from order book data, measuring spreads, slippage, and liquidity depth across multiple trade sizes and time periods.

Data Sources

We aggregate market data from leading cryptocurrency data providers through enterprise partnerships. Our data infrastructure captures:

  • Order Book Snapshots: Real-time bid/ask data across multiple depth levels, sampled at high frequency throughout each trading session
  • Trade Data: Executed trade information including price, size, and timestamps
  • Market Coverage: Data from 15+ major exchanges covering spot, perpetual, and futures markets
  • News & Sentiment: Real-time news feeds aggregated from major financial news sources for market context

Our data providers maintain direct connections to exchange APIs with redundant infrastructure to ensure data completeness and accuracy. We apply quality filters to identify and exclude anomalous data points.

Execution Quality Metrics

We evaluate exchanges across multiple dimensions of execution quality and market presence:

Volume & Market Share

Trading volume is a key factor in our overall rankings. Exchanges with higher market share demonstrate stronger liquidity and trader confidence, which are essential for reliable execution at scale.

Spread

The bid-ask spread measures the cost of immediately crossing the spread to execute a trade. We calculate spreads at multiple depth levels (1K, 5K, 10K, 50K, 100K, 500K, and 1M USD equivalent) to capture the full picture of execution costs across trade sizes. Tighter spreads indicate more competitive pricing.

Slippage

Slippage measures the price impact when executing larger orders. We calculate expected slippage by simulating market orders at various sizes against the live order book. This metric is especially important for institutional traders executing significant volume.

Spread Consistency

Beyond average spreads, we measure how stable spreads are over time. High consistency (low standard deviation) indicates reliable execution conditions, while high variability may signal liquidity concerns during volatile periods.

Bid/Ask Balance

We analyze the ratio of bid-side to ask-side liquidity and its stability. Balanced order books with consistent ratios suggest healthy two-sided markets. Persistent imbalances may indicate directional positioning or liquidity fragility.

Fragmentation

Fragmentation measures how liquidity is distributed across price levels. Lower fragmentation indicates concentrated liquidity near the mid-price, enabling better execution. Higher fragmentation may increase execution uncertainty for larger orders.

Grading System

Our grading system uses relative performance ranking to assign letter grades from A+ to C. This approach ensures grades reflect meaningful differences in execution quality compared to peers, rather than arbitrary absolute thresholds.

Grade Calculation

For each metric, we calculate composite scores at both retail (1K–10K USD) and institutional (50K–1M USD) trade sizes. Scores are then normalized using statistical methods that account for the distribution of performance across all exchanges.

Grade Interpretation
A+, A, A- Top-tier execution quality, significantly better than average
B+, B, B- Competitive execution quality, near or slightly above average
C+, C, C- Below-average execution quality compared to peers

Overall Grade

The overall grade combines performance across all five metrics. Each metric contributes equally to the composite score, which is then ranked relative to other exchanges to determine the final letter grade.

Dynamic Rankings: Grades are recalculated with each data update to reflect current market conditions. An exchange's grade may change as market liquidity shifts or as competitors improve or decline. We recommend monitoring trends over time rather than relying on single-point snapshots.

Retail vs. Institutional Grades

We provide separate grades for retail and institutional traders because execution quality can vary significantly by trade size:

  • Retail (1K–10K USD): Evaluates execution quality for smaller trades typical of individual traders. At these sizes, top-of-book liquidity is usually sufficient.
  • Institutional (50K–1M USD): Evaluates execution quality for larger trades that consume multiple price levels. Depth of book and slippage become more important at these sizes.

An exchange may excel at retail execution while underperforming for institutional sizes, or vice versa. We encourage users to focus on the grade tier most relevant to their typical trade sizes.

Time Periods & Regions

Execution quality varies throughout the trading day. We offer multiple analysis windows:

  • Latest (3 days): Most recent performance, useful for current conditions
  • Last Week (7 days): Short-term trend, smooths daily variations
  • Full History: Complete dataset, provides the most comprehensive view

Regional filters (Asia, US, EMEA trading hours) allow analysis of execution quality during specific market sessions, as liquidity patterns often differ by time zone.

Limitations & Considerations

  • Grades reflect order book conditions and may not capture all execution factors (e.g., order types, latency, fill rates)
  • Data coverage varies by exchange; lower coverage may affect grade reliability
  • Past performance does not guarantee future execution quality
  • Rankings are relative, all grades may shift if market conditions change broadly
  • This analysis does not constitute trading advice or endorsement of any exchange
